Comedic Highlight: Camille
History is weird, awkward, and funny.
I first saw Camille’s work on my For You Page a few months ago. It was POV - you’re on a date with the most progressive man in the 1900s. It was weird. It was funny. I thought it was a one off which I’ve often found with TikTok creators.

Thankfully I was wrong. I started seeing more and more of her work on my feed.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Watching her shorts, I think it’s easy to lump her in with Tim Robinson. There’s similarities in awkwardness and surrealism. Where Robinson lives in the contemporary and the slightly dated world of Millennial youth, Camille travels further back, imagining what the subjects of a Ken Burns documentary would be doing if they had a digital platform.
I think a better comparison would be with Python.
Monty Python clearly had a love for history and intellectualizing. Pulling elements not just from contemporary pop culture but history as well.
I think we tend to walk away from Monty Python being influenced by the surrealism. Which don’t get me wrong, I love and appreciate. But their playing with history is often overlooked. Camelot, Spanish Inquisition, Life of Brian, funniest joke in the world. Python is filled with historical references.
Camille is bringing that historical love to the cringe laced humor of younger generations. These are highlighted with her post-production which feels both old fashioned and surreal in the best ways possible.
Her ability to bring these historical elements to life is truly amazing. I don’t have to be knowledgable in the triangle shirtwaist factory to get a joke. I don’t need to be well read on the American Revolution to understand the federalist papers if founding fathers were in a group project at school. It’s accessible.

It’s really cool to see someone so young have such a strong comedic POV. It will surely evolve as all things do, but her voice feels clear and direct now. I think even if she wasn’t in these shorts, I’d know it was a Camille piece.
