🎃 Halloween isn't All About the Scare

But bags of bones seem so unsafe, it's semi-serious.

🎃 Halloween isn't All About the Scare

Halloween is for laughter.

Laughing at the fear that we all have of the dark. The things that lurk just beyond. Ghosts and goblins. A bit bigger now. Death and evil. Yes, there we are.

We dress as monsters to mock and to scare them all away as much as it’s possible. We take tours of haunted houses to scream and to laugh. At others. At ourselves. It’s not real, and it never will be.

We don the devil’s garb to say we are here, and we do not fear you. We think you are a fool with your pointy beard and little horns. How can we be scared of the evil in our own hearts? Or my neighbor’s?

Now is the time to tell that joke. The one that makes stomachs turn. The one that makes people wonder about you every other day of the year. Give the Addams Family a run for their money.

A fit of laughter after your fiancé jumped out from behind the door. A giggle as you pass a bowl of worms around a dark room. A smirk as you stab a pumpkin and carve out a crooked grin.

Halloween is for laughing and joy. It’s about finding your family and friends in the same black forest as you. For a moment you can laugh as death stalks just beyond your vision.

Halloween is for humans. Oh so human humans. We’ll play make believe and hide from spirits while dressed as gods and monsters. Heroes and villains. We can pretend to be what we always wanted to be.

Dress to impress or to hide. Don’t be bashful. That’s not what Halloween is for.

Take the dark thoughts you’ve had all year and let them out here. Pretend to do the things you’ve wanted to do. Make it a game. Let everyone see then you can all have a laugh. Tuck it all away again until next year.

Put the shadows behind you now.

That is what Halloween is for.
