For well over two years, I've been holding off on buying a new Switch. My current one was left behind at my mom's from when I stayed with her during the Pandemic.

In a fleeting noble moment, I left it behind for my younger relatives who came over to visit her. I knew the pain of visiting older relatives who no longer had kids and had nothing in the way of entertainment.

I missed my Switch within a month.

Since then I've waited for Nintendo to say something, anything about the next console. Each month it seemed just around the corner. Each Nintendo Direct, I waited for the announcement. I held off buying and there was nothing announced.

It was a choice I made thought I don't think I'd make it again. And yet, I still wait.

I knew there would be no announcement at the The Game Awards last week. I knew it. Nintendo doesn't announce big things on someone else's time. They own that shit. And yet, still I held my breath a little, hoped, and waited.

I am still waiting.

Nintendo is beholden to no man. Save, perhaps, Mario. But even he has a limit to his patience I'm sure. No, Nintendo does things on their own time and in their own way. Which is what I love about them.

They have made great advancements in play. They create with engagement first. They have a passion for innovation and maybe even a little risk (see the Wii U). They take failure in stride and come back stronger. Which is why everyone is ready for something new!

Original Nintendo Entertainment System ad. It says "Action-Packed Excitement for the Entire Family" at the top. Then an image of two sons playing mario and their mom and dad hugging them and watching. Under the image, there's a Nintendo Entertainment System logo on the right. On the left it says "Now the Entire Family Can Get In On the Action." Under that it says, "The Nintendo Entertainment System Action Set is a video system designed with the entire family in mind. That's because only Nintendo offers innovative accessories like the NES Advantage and NES Max for added excitement and a vast library of Game Pass that are both simple and sophisticated enough to challenge the abilities of everyone in the family."

Look, Nintendo. It's just you and me. You're old friend, Phil. I've been a fan since the NES when my brother and I convinced our mom to buy it for our dad. It was his Father's Day gift. He got the pack that came with two controllers, the light gun, Duck Hunt, Marios Brother. The whole enchilada. The full Action Set.

We loved it. Everyone played. Though, admittedly, my brother and I eventually took over. It became a highlight of my childhood and many more like me.

Since then, I've owned every Nintendo home console. Sometimes after the first few months of launch, sometimes years later towards the end of a console's life. But each one I've owned. And each time it was worth it. Even the weird WiiU. It was cool cause it was so different. I appreciated that.

And while I don't expect much change from the Switch to the new release, especially after seeing the leaks, I am eager to see it. Eager to play it and keep that cycle going. So, what do you say? You give me and everyone else a great Christmas present and announce the fucking thing!

Yes, I'm tired. It's probably my old age combined with some impatience from the last few years of COVID and personal loss, but I want that announcement like now. I want to give Nintendo my money! I want to bask in the glow of a new Mario Kart game. I want to figure out what innovative interactions they're trying. I want to get weirdly obsessed with peripherals and special editions of everything.

Like, not to be dramatic, but let's fucking go. Jeezus!
