Performance art is alive and well on TikTok.
The movement of the body in odd and angular ways, juxtaposed alongside a well-known though aged pop song, has created some of the greatest modern, digital artwork.
When not dancing and taking their moment in the spotlight, the artists stand in the background, supporting the art not as a features but pieces. Their poses ad something to the dialogue that they moving artist is creating between the viewer and them. Perhaps merely as a contradiction or an emphasis, or simply to cut away the negative space. Maybe, more likely, all of the above and then some.
The viewer gets something from each video, informed by their own experiences and background. Perhaps a call-back to a dance, a moment with friends, a moment alone, a painting, a thought.
They may see their own inability to be free or their own confidence reflected back at them.
The viewer will see something new from each artist. Each artist reveals something new about the humanity we share.
Art is alive and well.
